افاد باحثون أمريكيون بأن نبات التبغ يمكن أن يستخلص منه لقاح رخيص سهل الاستخدام ضد فيروس معوي مزعج يعرف باسم "نورو فيروس".وأشار الباحثون الأمريكيون إلى أنهم وجدوا طريقة لجعل التبغ ينتج بروتيناً يمكن أن يستخدم لقاحاً ينقط في الأنف ضد "النورو فيروس" الذي يتسبب في الإصابة بالاسهال والقيء خاصةً في رحلات السفن والمطاعم والمدارس والقواعد العسكرية.
وأكد تشارلز ارينتزين وهو عالم في أحياء النبات بجامعة اريزونا، أن "النورو فيروس" لا يشكل خطورة على الحياة إذا عولج بشكل مناسب، لكنه مزعج جداً جداً.
وتقدر مراكز مكافحة الأمراض والوقاية منها أن "النورو فيروس" الذي يعرف أيضاً باسم "نوروك فيروس" هو المسؤول عن 32 مليون حالة إصابة سنوياً بالأمراض المعوية.
وقد أظهرت التجارب أن أخذ هذا اللقاح عن طريق الأنف أفضل من أخذه عن طريق الفم
